Demographics
State-by-state demographic tables of general and homeless population indicators relate the distribution of funds to the concentration of poverty across the country. Each indicator has been selected to reflect family wellbeing, as is partly measured by income, housing, education, and health. To enable comparison between housed and homeless families, the indicators overlap as much as possible between the general and homeless populations of each state and locality. These demographics allow readers to identify population trends within and between states.
ICP recognizes that many of the homeless demographics tables are necessarily incomplete, given the limited availability of data. Additionally, some demographics presented here, drawn from point-in-time counts of homeless persons, may not provide a truly representative portrayal of local homeless populations because they overlook doubled-up or otherwise hidden homeless families. Let the gaps in the demographic tables serve as a call for broader and more reliable research on the livelihoods of low-income and homeless families in the United States.
